How to Entertain and Retain Viewers on TikTok Live

TikTok Live is a great way to connect with your potential audience and build not only a following but a community. However, it can be tough to stand out from the crowd and keep viewers engaged - especially with the scrolling environment of short form. That's why it's important to use strategies that will keep viewers entertained and coming back for more. Here are some tips on how to just that:

  • Be creative and original. Don't just copy what other creators are doing. Come up with your own ideas and be creative with your content.

    • For example, if you're a variety gamer, try going a step further than playing the trending game, you could create your own challenges or mods utilizing the different engagement types.

    • If you’re a master at your game, give your community a chance to prove their worth or learn from you!

  • Be genuine and authentic. Don't try to be someone you're not. Your viewers will be able to tell if you're being fake, and they'll be less likely to engage with you. If you're funny, don't be afraid to show your sense of humor. If you're informative, share your knowledge with your viewers. Just be yourself and let your personality shine through as authenticity matters.

  • Consistency. If you want to not only build a following on TikTok Live but foster community by having a loyal fanbase, you need to be consistent with your live streams. This means streaming at the same time each week, or even streaming every day. The more consistent you are, the more likely your viewers are to tune in and be consistent with you!

  • Interact with your viewers. This is probably the most important thing you can do to keep your viewers engaged. Make sure to read out their comments and answer/respond to their comments, and interact with them in a fun and engaging way when receiving gifts. For example, you could set a live goal with the community for doing a 24 hour stream for hitting a sub goal or large gifting goal. Could be a giveaway unlock or 1v1ing a sub every 100k likes. Maybe you have a minecraft server and it’s a money gun to join for life!

  • Start your live stream at a peak time. This means starting your live stream when your audience is most likely to be online. This helps ensure you have the largest opportunity to start with your core viewers! You can use TikTok's analytics dashboard to see when your audience is most active or ask a Diffraction Staff member for guidance.

  • Create a sense of urgency or anticipation. They are both powerful tools that can be used to keep people engaged in your LIVE. However, they should be used differently to achieve different results.

    • Anticipation can be used to create a sense of excitement and build excitement for something that is about to happen in the game/stream. For example, you can use anticipation to tease a new challenge, community goal, or action you are about to attempt. This could involve teasing what is to come and mentioning why to stick around, or simply creating a sense of mystery around it.

    • Urgency, on the other hand, can be used to motivate viewers to stay tuned in for the duration of the livestream. For example, a streamer might use urgency to announce that they will be giving away a prize to one of the viewers who stays tuned in until the end or every 100k likes. This could involve creating a countdown timer on the livestream during a gift or subathon, or simply stating that the prize will only be given away to one lucky viewer.

  • Run a giveaway, contest, or spinwheel . To build on above - this is a great way to attract new viewers and encourage your existing viewers to tune in. You can offer a variety of prizes, such as free products, gift cards, or even cash. We’re going to build some incentive programs to help here!

  • Use interactive elements and features. Interactive elements are a great way to get your viewers engaged and involved in your live stream. You can use polls, quizzes, or even just ask your viewers questions. This will help you build relationships with your viewers and encourage them to interact with you. To take a step further there are third party apps and plugins we can discuss.

  • End your live stream on a high note. This is your chance to leave a lasting impression on your viewers. Make sure to end your live stream with a call to action, such as asking your viewers to follow you or subscribe to your channel and mentioning the next time you’re going live!
